The History of Mimes
Long ago in Ancient Greece, there was a dancer called Pantomimus. His performances were the earliest forms of pantomiming, where stories or events were acted out without using words. There were also forms of mime shows in Medieval Europe, but it was not until the early nineteenth century when miming evolved into what we know it as today. When people think of mimes, they usually imagine a white-painted face, striped shirts, and sometimes berets, as shown in the picture above. However, by definition, a mime is an actor or performer skilled in the art of pantomime. Their appearance is irrelevant. Professional mimes often “tell” whole stories without speaking a word!
