2. When and how did you get into this business?
I answered an ad on Craigslist for a Princess to perform at kids parties and was hired at a small entertainment company. After working there for a short period, I decided to go out on my own. I used what I had… I took my Jessica McClintock wedding dress, dyed it blue, bought a DVD on how to perform magic, and created a “Cinderella Magic Show.” It took off, and I spent my weekends performing shows for the next few years. One of the most common activities I was asked to do in addition to the show was face paint, and I was really good at that. Flash forward many more years… that’s now my specialty.
3. What is the most memorable event you have ever worked at?
A client had hired me to be Cinderella at her little girl’s birthday party, but when I arrived, the mother was in a panic. The party had been going on for several hours and for whatever reason, not ONE of her friends had shown up! It was just me, this heartbroken little 5 year old, and a bunch of adults. The only supplies I had with me to entertain required a group of kids. It would only take me 5 minutes to paint her face and make her a balloon animal, and I was scheduled to be there for 3 hours.
I knelt down and said to the little girl (in my best Princess voice, of course), “Oh my goodness! You mean it’s just you and me? Well, that is just the best birthday gift I think I could imagine! I don’t have to share you with anyone? We get to play all by ourselves!” The little girl smiled and hugged me. We spent the afternoon coloring, playing Chutes and Ladders, and singing along to her favorite songs. That was, hands down, the best party I’ve ever done.
4. What is one thing you’d like everyone to know about you?
I think the one thing that makes me a little different from many other artists is that I’m a performer at heart. My background is in acting and stage. So when I’m at an event and a little boy wants a Glitter Tattoo, I don’t just apply his tattoo–I engage him, get a feel for his personality, and make a joke to put him at ease. Or, if a teenage girl is really shy, I may compliment her pretty eyes to soften her up. When a woman sits in my chair, it’s a guarantee we’re gonna start bonding about girly stuff. In other words, I’m aware that my canvas is a living breathing being, with thoughts and emotions and needs just like we all have. And I never lose sight of that. For me, it’s not just about how great an artist you are…it’s about who you are. And how you treat and interact with others is often way more memorable than the art itself.
