Featured Entertainer Irene S.
Where do you serve?
I serve Baltimore, MD and surrounding areas of Maryland.
What type of entertainment do you provide?
I’m a face painter but I’m learning how to do balloon twisting and henna.
How many years have you been in the business?
I have been in the business four years.
How did you get into the entertainment business?
I’ve always been a part of the arts. I have a BFA in Technical Theatre with an emphasis in Lighting Design. I was a professional Lighting Designer for 15 years. I still enjoy being a part of the theatre; I’m a Scenic Painter for local theatres in the area now. But I became a face painter about four years ago due to a friend’s recommendation. It’s really a great business; I get to make the young and the young at heart happy; nothing wrong with that!!
What’s your favorite type of event?
Birthday parties, of course!
What’s your most memorable event?
Face painting for a grand opening at a bakery. Seeing the enthusiasm of the owners starting a new venture was inspiring!

Grandparent’s Day: Sunday, September 11
Grandparent’s day is a perfect excuse to celebrate your parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents. Many retirement communities have events scheduled around the day designed to bring together several different generations. Here are some fun facts about the day:
- Started by Marion McQuade, a housewife in West Virginia.
- Celebrated by thousands of nursing homes, retirement communities, and families every year.
- Always falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
- Made an official holiday by President Jimmy Carter in 1978.
If you have a parent or grandparent in a retirement home, suggest to the facility that they plan a party on September 11… and don’t forget the entertainment! Grandparents would love a caricature drawing of their grandchild! It’s a lasting gift that they will cherish forever!

A Touch of History: Face Painting
The practice of face painting can be traced back thousands of years, taking on several different themes of usage throughout history. Face painting was used to identify separate tribal groups, to mark special occasions and events, and even to camouflage for soldiers and to strike fear into the enemy during battle. To Native Americans, the art of using paint on the body has a very powerful spiritual meaning among most tribes. Various cultural groups including the ancient Celts, Armies, Chinese opera singers, the Geisha, theater actors and court jesters all used face painting in a practical and methodical manner. Today, it’s evolved into a pastime to amuse and entertain children and adults alike. The roots of face painting are buried deep into history and culture and that’s what makes the practice so intriguing.

Another Satisfied Customer!
My company, an international adoption agency, hired Dee Vinchey {Clown} for a reunion we held for adoptive families. Both our staff and the families in attendance were beyond impressed with Dee’s work. She worked quickly and efficiently, and each child felt special with their fun painted face or arm. Dee is a consummate professional. Throughout the afternoon I was busy organizing the other events of the day, but Dee arrived, set up, and got started and had a very organized way of working. I wasn’t able to see her at work for most of the time, but I didn’t have to worry about anything as she was very prepared and great with the kids. I highly recommend her and would gladly request her services at future events. –Jillian B., VA
The event (our 40th high school reunion) went VERY WELL! The {caricature artist}, Isaac K., was excellent! Everyone really enjoyed having him there, and the caricatures he produced were great. Everyone commented on how nice he was too. Thanks for making it happen!–M. Shannon K., OH
