Lawrence L - Virginia Magicians

Lawrence L is one of our Magicians in Mechanicsville:

Lawrence was a graduate student at the University of California Los Angeles when a friend took him to the Magic Castle in Hollywood where he saw magic for the first time in many years. He decided to learn more about magic, become a performing magician (because one must perform to make magic “real”), and to join the Academy of Magical Arts or Magic Castle. He studied for about a year on his own and at the Chavez College of Magic before he started performing for small clubs in Los Angeles and Hollywood. He started by developing a silent act (magic to music) and later developed the talking cabaret pieces mostly for adult audiences. Later he moved to Upstate New York where he followed a career as a mathematical epidemiologist modeling the AIDS epidemic and later teaching at the State University of New York at Albany. While in Albany he performed magic at a wide variety of events.

Lawrence performed at the Magic Castle in Hollywood a number of times, developed special cabarets for First Night, and helped to write a show at the Schenectady Light Opera. Later he moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia which has been his home for a few years.

Options:

Strolling: A number of good "pick-a-card" effects, coins are a favorite of his, and a borrowed ring routine, a borrowed bill routine, and a very realistic plastic mouse that he can produce from someone’s jacket. He can provide a portable close up table that allows him to stand in one place and do magic. It is much like a small stage act. He can add some ambience music as well: typically Joplin.

Birthday Show: Lawrence's shows are suited better for children over 6 years old. He uses as much silent magic to music as possible and follows the show outlined in his stage show description. For age six or more he will generally open with the thimbles and a rope routine to music (features magician in trouble) and go to a sponge ball routine usually with the birthday person. The talking frogs, a routine by Bob McAlister. This is a three frog monte to identify the frog that can “talk”. Don’t worry, he doesn’t say much. We have a contest between the birthday child and a parent. The kid always wins. This is followed by Bob McAlister’s Oreo cookie miser’s dream. Cookies are produced for after the show. If the children are old enough, he'll manifest a ghost, who does some magic and writes the birthday person a happy birthday message. If the kids are old enough he has the birthday person read the mid of a friend. Usually ending the show with some Chinese magic typically the snow storm. He has a special routine for kids to make a butterfly and for a large show he can finish with a shower of sweets (wrapped candy,) ala Hoffman’s magic.

Stage Show: The stage show depends on the size of the audience and the length of time of performance. Typically Lawrence will mix silent magic to music with cabaret talking routines. Opening with the glass on cane, followed by a manipulative piece (stage coin routine, or thimbles or rope). He will start talking with the card in envelope or sometimes card to pocket, proceeding with a number of cabaret talking routines which may include color changing silk, manifesting a ghost, the three card routine, miser’s dream with a bucket and spectator, stage coins across, multiplying bottles, the hydrostatic glass, the linking rings, and one of several stage card routines that he has developed. Currently he is developing a version of Tony Clark’s paper balls and rings. The act finishes with a number of Chinese effect to Chinese music: cut and restored ribbon, ribbons thru the neck, the egg trick, steamer and snow storm, and making a butterfly (blendo). He also has a large production finale: either a goblet of jewels or a pair of six foot flags on brass flag poles. If it is a small audience he will do more cabaret effects and end with the snow storm. In a more intimate setting he can do some mentalism with billets. He is very good with billets and often uses them in a magic effect and not mentalism.
