George E - Maryland Caricature Artists
Baltimore artist George E is accomplished in many mediums including cartooning, painting, photography, and the new digital mediums. His artistic style ranges from the humorous to realistic to abstract.
George's artistic background is extensive. He was reaised in a family of artists. His father, sister, and brother were art teachers and his mother sold pencil sketches and prints. George studied art extensively, first in a special art cirriculum course in high school at Baltimore City College, then at MICA, which was known as the Maryland Institute of Art at the time, on a full scholarship; and then at Ohio University at the graduate level.
George started drawing faces on the boardwalk in Ocean City in 1974 in an art shop run by Caricaturist Irv Finifter. He worked with caricaturists Sam Thong, Dan Ginter, Dave Thompson, John Ebersberger, Jeff Mandell, and Rick Wright; familiar names still in the caricature community. He also worked for Charley Fulton, a caricaturist in the D.C. area. Then George worked in Lake George, NY in the 1980's for Roger Webb, on of the few caricature artists who used india ink and a brush, before getting his own spot in front of the old Delevan Restaurant from another caricaturist, Joel Ostberg.
During this time George also traveled with Jinx Harris Shows, among others; groups of artist who set up in shopping malls for four or five days at a time throughout the Washington DC and New York corridor, such as Cherry Hill Mall, NJ; Lehigh Valley Mall, PA; Quakerbridge Mall, NJ; Paramus Park Mall, NJ; and many other well known malls throughout the area.
In the 1990's George worked mainly in the Baltimore area, but more independently, first with his own stand at Towsontowne Centre, then Harundale Mall, and for the last 10 years at White Marsh Mall. He is also doing "Monday Night Caricatures" currently at The Crease Restaurant and Lounge in Towson, MD.
