2. How did you get into the business?
I’ve been drawing professionally for about 25 years now. I got started while I was in college, working summers at a local theme park. I fell in love with the whole quick sketch thing – drawing a 5 minute sketch was right up my alley.
3. What was your most memorable event with About Faces?
I had been booked to draw
digital caricatures for a company holiday party. It was really nice, with lots of entertainment, and they had a “Nightmare before Christmas” theme. The artists were so popular, and our lines got so long. We skipped our breaks and stayed an extra hour. Unfortunately,
I still had to cut off my line because the party was
about to end.
The next month, I got a booking to draw digitally at a wedding. Couples were really loving the whole idea of a computer drawing. Halfway through the event, I started to draw a couple. They told me that they tried to get drawn last month at a party, but
the line was so long they never got drawn. The party was themed and they were the only ones to come in costume. They dressed as Jack Skellington and Sally from the Nightmare before Christmas.
“I drew at that event!” I replied.
“OMG, you were the artist we wanted to get drawn by!” They were so excited with the little 5 minute drawing I did for them. They planned to take it home and display it in a frame. They laughed so hard and gave me a huge hug.
Sometimes we work these events and start to think of them as just jobs. A way to use our talents to make a living. Sometime we forget the few moments we give may be someone’s favorite moment of their day, their week, or their month. That memory may be
hung on the wall or put into a scrap book and treasured for years to come. I’d like to think that someday, they’ll pull that drawing out and tell their grandchildren what an adventure it was to get that little drawing done.
4. What is one thing you’d like everyone to know about you?
I love drawing for people. It’s not just a job, it’s my joy. I feel so blessed to be doing this for a living, and I feel blessed to share my joy with others.
